Because we are a no-kill facility, we are not able to take every single animal that needs a home.  The rooms at the shelter are typically at capacity so it is important you contact the shelter before you bring your animal in.  We cannot accept animals without prior approval.

WHHS spends about $400 per shelter animal, per year.  It is important to know that we will ask for a surrender fee to help care for the animals you would like to place with us.

We cannot compromise the health and well-being of our current residents by taking in more animals that we have resources and space available.  We limit our intake based on the current capacity at the shelter.  If we do not currently have room for your pet we will place you on a waiting list.  We will also do our best to match you with individuals looking for the type of pet you are trying to rehome.

Kittens:  We understand that we are the closest shelter to many areas, but due to the above mentioned reasons and because kittens come to us in large numbers, Western Hills Humane Society regrettably cannot take any kittens from outside the Spearfish/Lawrence County area.  This includes Belle Fourche, Sturgis and Wyoming areas.  We are empathetic of the need for rescues from these areas and urge residents to encourage their local government to take positive action on the behalf of unwanted kittens.  Kittens from Spearfish/Lawrence County will be taken as kennel space allows.

Please call first and make sure we have kennel space available. Click here to fill out the animal surrender form.  Fill it out completely and bring it to the shelter with the animal you are surrendering.
